Base camp in Shiogama

April 11

The team reports:
Yesterday, we set up camp next to the Shiogama evacuation center near Sendai, collected information, and arranged our activities for the next three days. Today, it's raining and very cold. We brought coffee, cake and cookies to the evacuees at the Shiogama shelter, and talked to evacuees asking what would be needed most. This shelter has basic supplies and hard-working volunteers, but many things needed for daily life are still missing. For example, the elderly are missing their hearing aids, and spring clothing will be needed soon. We will make coffee again at the shelter tomorrow morning, and will then move on to Kesenuma, a badly damaged area closer to the coast, where we are scheduled to cook hot meals including kasujiru soup and takoyaki Japanese dumplings.
We will report soon again!  The SWTJ team.
